Jackson State University is an NCAA Division I school, with baseball, basketball, football, golf, tennis, and track & field for men and basketball, bowling, softball, tennis, track & field, and volleyball for women. The football team is in the I-AA division of the NCAA. The team nickname is the Tigers.

The Jackson State Tigers compete in the Southwestern Athletic Conference of the NCAA in football, baseball, softball, bowling, golf, soccer, tennis, track, volleyball, and men’s and women’s basketball. Football competes in Division I-AA and all other sports compete in Division I. The football program dates to the early ‘20s, when players were volunteers and competition was strictly within the state. The football team today plays in the 62,500-seat Mississippi Veterans Memorial Stadium. Other teams that have been in existence for decades include the baseball team (1920s) and the men’s basketball team (1930s). The first women’s sport program was track and field, which was added in 1958.
